Use canister vacuums without beater bars or gentle brooms. For high-powered upright vacuums, use the handheld attachment or turn off the beater bar. Avoid vacuuming over the edges and fringes. If the rug is reversible, vacuum both sides and use the handheld attachment for the fringes.
